SIRC True Perspectives Seminar on HealthCare Legislation – April 18

SIRC hosted its second True Perspectives Seminar of 2012 on April 18 at the Plantation Club on the Effects of ObamaCare on the Hospital Industry. Tarry Mills Hodges outlined the new legislation from her perspective as Director, Government Relations, for St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System in Savannah (the second oldest continuously running hospital system in the U.S., started in 1875).

Georgia hospitals in total contribute 6% of the state’s GDP and $33 billion a year to the economy, employing almost 140,000 people. Savannah’s hospitals treat over 100,000 outpatients and 4,000 inpatients a year. Click to read more

True Perspectives Seminar– May 31 – Georgia, the State of the State
The next True Perspectives seminar will be on May 31, 5:00pm at the Plantation Club covering highlights of the 2012 Georgia Legislative Session. Presenters again will be State Senator Buddy Carter and State Representative Ben Watson, MD.

The General Assembly convened on January 9, 2012 and closed on March 29. The 40 days of formal sessions and numerous committee meetings shaped the new legislation dealing with:
• State Budget
• Tax Reform
• Open Meetings
• Drug Testing for welfare recipients
• Charter Schools
• TSPLOST, and
• Criminal Justice Reform.

They will also answer your questions and listen to your opinions in a real “town hall” format.

Cost: $5 for SIRC members, $10 for non-members. There will be a member/cash bar available plus an antipasto table. The meeting should adjourn by 6:45pm. To reserve a spot or for more information, contact Jack Kaster at 598-7714 or kasjac@bellsouth.net.

True Perspectives – July 11 – Iran – Israel and Beyond
Dr. Robert R. Friedman, director of the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange and Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice at Georgia State University will share his views on the likely effects of escalating tensions in the Middle East. He has worked extensively in areas of community policing, terrorism and crime analysis. He is the recipient of numerous state, national and international awards in related fields and is a sought after speaker on community policing and homeland security. 5:00pm, the Plantation Club.

Poll Workers Needed
Georgia’s Secretary of State Brian Kemp spoke to local Republicans on May 7 at the Mulberry Inn on the subject of Voting Integrity in Georgia. Nothing is more important to our functioning democracy than trust in the voting integrity to reflect the true will of the people.

To help insure that integrity we need three or four more volunteers from the Skidaway Island Republican Club to volunteer their time on election day to work some polls – especially in Democratic stronghold districts. To do that please register at the Board of Elections (1117 Eisenhower Drive, Suite F) by May 15 for training to be held on June 11 (or alternate days that week). There is remuneration ($100) for your time and gratitude for your devotion to being vigilant on our local, state and national election process.

Our local elections have experienced some forms of fraud at our polling places, such as:
• Poll workers mistakenly helped voters make their choices in the booth,
• Poll workers sometimes allowed family members to vote for other family members,
• Reports were turned in at the end of the day with math errors,
• ID is not checked when someone comes to vote at a Poll.
Secretary Kemp also pointed out the need for vigilance on absentee ballots, where other abuses have occurred, since there is less scrutiny of who actually voted. He also pointed out the irony of the state of Oregon that has gone to total mail-in paper ballots, with no apparent requirement to verify ID.

CCRP Seeks “Get Out the Vote” Volunteers
The Chatham County Republican Party (CCRP) seeks workers to help with this year’s crucial “get out the vote” measures. Volunteers are needed to staff the County Headquarters one day a week from 10:30am to 1:30pm. Sign up for a training session on either May 12, June 16 or July 21 at CCRP headquarters, 11 E 73rd Street. For more information or to register for training, see website: chathamgop.com, or call 912-927-8440.

Pamphlet on Liberal Myths – Additional Volunteers Sought
SIRC is seeking editorial volunteers for a large-scale project to publish a pamphlet debunking some prominent liberal myths. This is a continuation of the Paul Fisher op ed article in January. This future op ed will choose among the following myths:

Constitution
. Should be a living document, changing with the mores of the times.

Economic
. “Uneven” distribution of wealth needs to be countered by government programs
. Free trade cause us to lose manufacturing jobs overseas
. Need to raise tax rates to cover federal spending

Foreign Policy
. Peace is achievable through accommodation and friend cultivation
(American imperialism is an international disgrace deserving of our apology to the world.)

Environment
. Global warming fears should help us get off our carbon fix
(Need to wean off oil soon and replace with renewable energy)

Government Programs –
. School choice undermines the basis of our free education system
. Health care is a basic right that the Government needs to supply, like Europe
. More gun control laws will stop violent crime

Unions
. Right to work laws thwart the ability of unions to gain strength to counter unfair corporate exploitation of workers

Any readers with a special interest and expertise in any of the following topics, please contact project director Mike Walters (598-0351, mawalters@mac.com) on the areas you wish to contribute. We will then add you to the editorial board for what is planned as a published document made more widely available than just our membership.
